The exercises recognizing melody entry-level and recognizing melody are preparatory exercises for the exercise Chapter 1.17 Melodic deviation.

The purpose of this exercise is to learn to hear the difference between two differently notated melodies. The difference between these two melodies concerns only one note.


1. Exercise recognizing melody entry-level

Ear Training exercise 1a: recognizing melody. The played melody is notated twice. Choose the right melody.

Example question

The next melody is being played:

Which melody do you hear?

Choise 1: No image!

Choise 2: No image!

 

Practical steps

The difference between the first and second melody is the second beat in the second measure:

  1. in the first melody, an E is being played. In the second measure, the melody descends from G to E to C (E-C is a third).
  2. in the second melody, a D is being played. In the second measure, the melody descends from G to D to C (D-C is a second).

Sing the two notated melodies to train your inner hearing abilties. Then play the melody and try to hear whether it descends from

  1. G to E to C (choise 1) or
  2. G to D to C (choise 2).

Answer: choice 1.

  1. In the first melody, a G is being played. In the second measure, the melody ascends from E to F to G.
  2. In the second melody, an E is being played. In the second measure, the melody ascends from E to F and then descends to E.
